Photographed in repeated crouching positions, the gender of the nude figures is rendered ambiguous; in some of Tunick's other images, he specifically groups subjects by gender and ethnicity. His process is a form of protest against the fundamental conventions of polite society, but also a reevaluation of the tradition of the nude as erotic symbol or exhibitionist performance.
