Je est un autre [I is another]
Art Digital is an international yearly festival of digital arts, whose first edition dates back to 2002. It is Russia’s most acclaimed and popular event celebrating art and new technologies in Russia. This year’s edition, Art Digital 6: The Others, is a visual investigation of the notion of “Otherness”. Simply put, the main question that the exhibition tries to answer is “What does being “different” mean today?” In particular, is social commitment still a valid issue for the gallery goers? Has fighting for the rights of homosexuals, women and immigrants become ineffective “preaching to the converted”? Who are today’s minorities that art should protect and fight for?
The artists participating in the exhibition have answered the call each one in his/her personal way. For example, some criticise the cultural incidence of what is considered to be popular in today’s contemporary art markets. Others, in line with the work of the “historical” video activists of the 1970s, question the “fabricated truths” constantly imposed on the audience that behave like “emancipated clones” by mass media corporations. Others have built for themselves “ivory towers in which their own personal preoccupations and desires dominate over global topics.
Although each project on show reflects a different postion, all of them prove that Art that is called “contemporary” is revolutionary by nature, because it does not conform to that picture of the world given by money and political power which is commonly known as “mainstream”.
