Face. Image. Time.
From Modernism to Contemporary Art.

Curator: Alexandra Kharitonova

Since the earliest times representation of man has been among the main themes of the fine arts. It is the image of man in all sorts of genres and variations, from nude to portraits that serves as a specific touchstone revealing major stylistic trends of each epoch.

In late 19th and early 20th century traditional system of genres underwent considerable changes and transformation. The image of a pioneer, a vanguard artist who creates a new artistic universe, came to the fore. The 21st century impresses by the abundance of individual artistic concepts which succeed each other like in a kaleidoscope.

The beginning of the 20th century saw the withdrawal from the post-Renaissance humanistic artistic concept which considered man to be the main subject of representation. Contemporary artists view the image of man as a sort of material the artist can use to demonstrate his or her artistic strategy in an open dialogue with philosophic and general cultural context of the time and the art of  previous era`s.

What has changed in the artistic interpretation of the image of man? What do the artists of the previous era and our contemporaries see in man? What is their vision of themselves and their time? We are trying to look at these questions in particular, presenting the viewers the artworks of late 19th – early 21st centuries, created by leading Russian and contemporary Western artists.
